  • First, determine if your toilet isn't flushing because of a blockage. If something is lodged in the system, the water will not flow properly.

To pump the system, flush once and use a plunger to create suction. Pump the toilet rigorously to attempt to force the block through the pipes. If successful, the water will drain from the toilet. Be careful to flush only once or you may cause the water to overflow the basin.

Help, my handle isn't flushing the toilet.

If nothing happens when you move your toilet handle, lift the lid and see if the flapper is correctly attached. A small chain hooks to the flush mechanism and the handle. If the chain has come loose, put in back into place and try again.

  • The troubleshooting pattern varies slightly depending on your property. If you live in a single family home and are having power issues, verify that you're the only property affected in your neighborhood. Storms and construction occasionally cause power outages, which the utility company will work to resolve as soon as possible.

If you're the only impacted home, reset your circuit breaker to attempt to restore the power. If this doesn't help, call your electrical provider for assistance.

  • In a single-family property, check your hot water heater for problems. Verify that the thermostat is set correctly and the tank is not in vacation mode. You may need to reset the tank and wait 15 to 20 minutes to see whether hot water is restored.

  • If your property's climate control system is malfunctioning, first check your thermostat and verify that the settings are correct. If you continue to have problems, make sure a electrical issue is not the cause by verifying that you have power.

  • If you're concerned about your personal safety or have an emergency situation, call 911 for assistance.
